Proceed with Discernment

J. D. Greear’s recent sermon on Romans 1:24-32, which he preached at his church on January 27, 2019, underscores the need for believers to know and uphold what the Bible says about homosexuality. Greear, after all, isn’t just a pastor, but also the current president of the Southern Baptist Convention. His words should have provided clarity, but I fear they have confused people instead.

Unfortunately, Greear’s sermon represents the direction many of today’s evangelical leaders are taking the church with regard to the matter of homosexuality. I’ve written an article about some of the misleading statements in evangelical circles (not just from Greear) on this important topic.

You can access the article here. It’s titled “Know and Uphold Biblical Teachings on Homosexuality.”

A link to Greear’s sermon is provided in footnote #1, along with a link to an excellent critique of the sermon by by theologian and video blogger Jon Harris, and a link to an outstanding online article by Pastor Joseph Spurgeon of the Sovereign King Church in southern Indiana.

This article is one of several Word Foundations articles highlighting elements in the social justice movement. To access additional articles on social justice, go here.
